Globe Gallery was delighted to present CIVIC, a textile installation located in the Bridge Gallery at Tynemouth Metro Station. Conceived and produced by artists Lucy Thomas, Bethan Harris, and Anna Mud of Blue Chalk Collective, the work drew inspiration from maritime signal flags—historically used to convey messages between ships and to those on shore.
The installation featured five large fabric flags, each representing a letter, together spelling the word “CIVIC.” This palindrome was chosen for its symbolic resonance: a reflection of cyclical movement, mutual exchange, and the notion of return—echoing the rhythms of public life and the transitional nature of places like train stations.
Rooted in a spirit of collective care, CIVIC responded directly to its setting in Tynemouth Station, highlighting the civic values of shared responsibility for public spaces and the importance of community well-being. It also encouraged reflection on climate-conscious practices—especially the significance of sustainable travel by trains and boats.
Through the interplay of language, symbols, and space, the installation invited the public to consider the role of civic infrastructure as a place of encounter, belonging, and connection.
Presented in partnership with North Tyneside Art Studio, and with support from the Newcastle University Bartlett Fund.
