‘Coming Out’ was a development and expansion of the artist’s unique approach to place by using the whole of North Tyneside as the site. It brought domestic objects found in the area into the gallery space, with sometimes drastic interventions and alterations performed on them.

Smith used the old to create something new, changing what we see and how we see it. Together these works form a darkly humorous and playful repositioning of the familiar and the everyday.
